After making history by becoming the first Zimbabwean City to receive Wetlands City status recently, the Ramsar Wetlands City of Victoria Falls officially launched it’s Environmental Sustainability Monograph, showing commitment to sustainable management of the environment and reduction of emissions.
The certification for Wetland City was done at the recent Wetlands COP15 Victoria Falls ZW.
The Sustainability Monograph is a practical strategic document that identifies the city’s sources of Green House Gas Emissions, quantifies and creates a data baseline and then formulates strategic pathways for reduction of emissions with specific targets and structured Emissions Reduction Projects ( Carbon credits projects).
Such initiatives have high impact on climate action and implementation of Sustainable Development Goals, as they accelerate Zimbabwe’s Nationally Determined Contributions targets attainment and the Net Zero goals while unlocking vast opportunities for circular economy.
The City has embarked on a road to formulate green policies and make bold commitments to the Net Zero goals, aligning with the Paris Agreement and making a colossal climate impact.
This creates an opportunity to make generate revenue from millions of Carbon Credits for the City, from carbon and ESG financing.
With the help of Anglistone T Mthiyane Sibanda, the Wetland City becomes the second City in Zimbabwe after Bulawayo which launched early this year.
Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife Chief Director Dr Washington Zhakata presided over the launch on behalf of Minister Dr Evelyn Ndlovu.
