The National Social Security Authority (NSSA) on Thursday engaged the City of Victoria Falls to assess the state of safety and health at the Council premises while also educating staff about risks, hazards and safety at work.
The NSSA team was represented by Matabeleland North provincial Principal Occupational Safety and Health officer Mr Lovemore Mpofu and Hwange district OSH Ms Nothando Phulu.
The NSSA team held safety and health talks with transport, water, roads, electrical, procurement, fire and ambulance, health and refuse collection sections to educate them about how to prevent accident at the workplace.
The Council teams were joined by maintenance teams from Ilala Lodge and Palm River Hotel who attended the OSH talk as part of a partnership between the Council and Spencer’s Creek Hospitality Group, which seconded it’s workers to understudy some operations at Council.
The team has also visited the fire and ambulance section with the same motive to educate and raise awareness on OSH.
After being briefed about internal safety measures, the staff through safety and accident prevention talk to ensure the workplace has zero risk.
Discussion areas centered around the need for safety talk before commencing work, protective wear, unsafe acts, work permits documentation at work premises, signage and labelling or risk areas, standard operating procedures, having safety officers at every section, importance of wellness and others.
Also part of the talk is on Mental Health for Men which is commemorated annually in June. The engagement also touched on schemes and benefits run by the parastatal.
The team also had a courtesy call on His Worship , Councillor P. T Moyo, the Mayor and Town Clerk Mr R Dube where Mr Mpofu acknowledged some risks had gone down at the City’s premises compared to previous visits showing Council is implementing some of the recommendations.
The Town Clerk also proposed the need to constantly update workers about their contributions and anticipated benefits.
